Building a Foundation in Science and Education

Before she could earn enough money as a professional artist, Ann returned to college and completed a bachelor degree in life science. Through this experience, Ann built upon her understanding of biology, so she could appreciate all aspects of nature even further. This would enable her to recognize and observe the intricate details and patterns found in nature.

For approximately twenty years, Ann worked as an educator. In addition to being an educator, Ann developed a patient and creative approach to learning. She developed a passion for learning, as well as a desire to inspire students to think creatively. As long as Ann had been interested in the arts, while she was employed as an educator, Ann tried multiple mediums of artistic expression to find what type(s) of medium(s), she could utilize to create her ideas into reality.

Discovering the Power of Pastel

For many years, Ann explored all kinds of art, but nothing really spoke to her as much as pastels did.

Ann felt the deep richness of texture & color combined with the vibrant pigments allowed her to see the world around her through an entirely new lens. She found herself using pastels almost exclusively for her work & they eventually became her signature style.

Through endless hours of trial & error, Ann has created a one-of-a-kind technique using only her hands/fingers. This technique creates luminous works of art full of atmosphere, light, movement & emotion. Her goal is to connect you emotionally with the beauty of nature.

Finding Inspiration in the Pacific Northwest

Today, Ann is living on a rocky eastern shore of a Pacific Northwest Island. The area has unpredictable weather; vibrant color-filled sunrises; and breathtaking views surrounding each day of her life.

There are many inspirational things about this area.

She can walk on long coastal trails; visit local farms; see wildlife roaming free; and draw or paint anywhere that she wants to, which gives Ann the opportunity to experience and be surrounded by the world she is painting. This allows her to show both what she sees as well as how it makes her feel.

Painting the Spirit of Nature

Ann's work is guided by a fundamental yet significant objective. She aims to give the viewer an opportunity to appreciate the beauty and joy she has found in the natural world.

She does not simply want to recreate a view, rather she wants to express the energy, feeling, and emotional relationship between people and nature.

Her paintings often feature:

Coastal Landscapes

Inspired by shorelines, ocean views, and island scenery.

Wildlife

Celebrating the animals that inhabit the Pacific Northwest, and beyond.

Rural Beauty

Capturing farms, fields and peaceful countryside settings.

Light and Atmosphere

Exploring the effects of changing weather, seasons and natural light.

Nature’s power, beauty and sense of joy remain recurring themes throughout her body of work.

Expanding into Children’s Literature

Ann's work as an artist has taken her on a path to explore the world of children's books.

Granny's Clan: A Tale of Wild Orcas is a book that Ann illustrated. The book tells a story about wild orcas from the Pacific Northwest.

Ann was able to use this project to combine three things she loves: wildlife, teaching/education and telling stories visually. She created illustrations for the book which allow young readers to understand their relationship to the ocean and to learn about marine conservation.

Sharing Art with the Community

Ann has continued to share her love of nature through her artwork in an effort to help create a greater awareness and respect for the world around us throughout all of her years as an artist.

You may view some of Ann's paintings at Orcas Island Artworks and see how she is able to bring together her own unique talent along with many other local area artists.

Ann continues to inspire people who visit her exhibits or see her paintings in galleries across the country by continuing to celebrate nature and its wonders.

Looking Ahead

Ann's art is always evolving as she sketches, walks and paints. The landscape, wildlife and seasonal changes of the Pacific Northwest will continue to be an ongoing influence on her artwork; as well as the creative process which will allow her to see things in different ways while remaining true to what has been the foundation of her artwork since the start.

Each piece of art is a reflection of her life long pursuit of observing nature, creating beauty and having a love for it.
